Great Lakes Givers is committed to enhancing the lives of seniors in Michigan through vital nutrition programs, ensuring they receive the meals they need to thrive. Our focus is on supporting home-delivered meal services, such as Meals on Wheels, and congregate meal sites that foster community and connection among seniors. Every dollar donated translates into healthy meals and safety checks, addressing the critical need for nutrition in our aging population.
By donating your vehicle, you effectively turn it into meals for seniors who may be isolated or unable to shop for themselves. The average cost of delivering a meal, including safety checks, is around $7. Your contribution, whether big or small, helps to leverage these funds into impactful nutrition initiatives that feed hundreds. Together, we can combat hunger and promote health for Michigan's seniors.

↗Real impact, real numbers
Your donations have the power to deliver an array of meals to seniors who need them most. A donation of $1,500 can fund over 200 home-delivered meals for isolated seniors, ensuring they receive not just food, but also valuable safety check-ins. Alternatively, it can provide more than 400 meals at congregate meal sites, where seniors gather for nourishment and camaraderie. With larger donations of $2,500 or $5,000, the reach expands significantly, translating into even more meals and additional support services. Each dollar maximizes every effort to keep our seniors healthy and connected.
How we vet recipient partners
At Great Lakes Givers, we prioritize accountability and transparency in our partnerships. We work exclusively with vetted nonprofits that meet strict federal and state standards, such as those under the Older Americans Act Title III-C nutrition standards. Our partners are typically contracted providers through Area Agencies on Aging and members of the Meals on Wheels America network, ensuring that they operate without waiting lists or with only short waiting lists, indicating that sufficient funding is available for service continuity.
How proceeds flow
After covering towing and processing costs, approximately 70-80% of gross proceeds from vehicle donations are directed to our partner organizations. The specific ratio of program funding allows for the most effective distribution of funds, ensuring that more dollars translate into meals and essential services for Michigan's seniors. Together, we maximize the impact of each donation received.
Michigan recipient landscape
Michigan faces unique challenges in addressing senior hunger and isolation, with many seniors living alone and struggling to access proper nutrition. Local organizations are working tirelessly to meet these needs, yet the demand for services continues to grow. State-level funding for senior programs can be inconsistent, placing additional strain on local meal initiatives. By supporting senior meal programs in Michigan, you are making a direct difference in the lives of your neighbors and ensuring that our seniors remain nourished and connected.
